Christmas is always the busiest season for Nelson Cathedral, and this year is no different. We have many opportunities to share the good news of Jesus by inviting our neighbours, friends and family along to the events and services that are happening over this period. The first three weeks of the Christmas Festival have seen 2,200 votes so far, representing at least that many visitors. As one local minister said:
We have incorporated bringing kids from our programme to see the Christmas trees and then share Jesus with them. It’s a great segue to the gospel.
We have also hosted six concerts over the last three weekends from the Chroma Choir, the Nelson Civic Choir and our own Cathedral Concert featuring the NBS Nelson Brass Band and Cathedral Choir. As a result, 1900 people have entered the cathedral to enjoy this sacred space and the sacred music… and yes, that even includes your favourite Christmas carols. As one cathedral parishioner stated after attending our concert last Sunday:
Your celebratory music yesterday was the best Christmas gift of shared experience. It soothed and uplifted and I appreciate the hours given to achieve this artistic accomplishment.
While these special events are happening, we also continue with our regular services and special Christmas services such as Advent Carols and Nine-Lesson and Carols. Just over 700 people have joined in for our worship events in the last 3 weeks.
So in a world that needs to hear about the good news of hope, peace, joy and love that Jesus brings, can I encourage you to take the opportunity to invite people along to your cathedral and see what is going on, and to join you in whatever Christmas celebration you have planned in your part of God’s kingdom.
