Welcoming Mark and Kirsty

Bishop Steve is delighted to announce the appointment of Rev Mark Johnson as the new vicar at Golden Bay Parish.

Mark and his wife Kirsty have been at the helm of the wonderfully diverse St Tom’s Church in Newtown, Wellington since 2015. During his tenure, Mark has not only led the church but also served as the supervising chaplain at Victoria University from 2011 to 2017.

Before coming to New Zealand, Mark was the director of the Minneapolis base of Steiger International (a ministry that came out of YWAM in Amsterdam). He also pastored The Salvage Yard Church, a church to the counter culture – punks, hippies, artists, musicians and university students.

Over the last five years, Mark and Kirsty have extended their ministry through "St Tom’s on Wheels", a travelling Jesus community that has brought the love of God to the hippie scene at festivals and new age communities. Their first visit to Tākaka was in 2019, following an invitation to join a group of Christians at a new age festival. Since then, they have returned fifteen times, witnessing an incredible hunger for Jesus among spiritual seekers in Golden Bay. St Tom’s on Wheels has done amazing work leading people to Jesus and baptising new believers.

After returning to Golden Bay in April this year, Mark and Kirsty felt God nudging them towards a new season of ministry there. The part-time vicar role will allow them to follow up with those who have encountered Jesus and been baptised over the past five years.

Last month, Mark, Kirsty and some of their crew joined us at Leadership Camp at Lake Rotoiti, where they shared some of their stories.

Please join us in praying for Mark, Kirsty, and their boys as they prepare to transition to Tākaka in February 2025. May God bless their ministry and work powerfully through them in the vibrant and varied communities of Golden Bay.
