The All Saints hall in Nelson twinkled with lights and tinsel on Wednesday night for a mid-winter Christmas celebration. Festive songs played and colourful hats towered above heads – supplied from a box at the door.
Over 50 people showed up, each who had bought a ticket (under a “pay what you can” system up to $10) to dine at this special Loaves & Fishes dinner.
Gary, the Loaves & Fishes co-ordinator, says it all started with a gift of two turkeys from Kai Rescue earlier in the year. “We decided that leaving them until the end of the year was going to be a bit long! It sparked the idea – let’s do something to celebrate the community during the bleak middle of winter.”
Chef Nick Gastrell and his team cooked up a warm meal of turkey and chicken with stuffing and roast veges, followed by homemade ginger trifle prepared by chef Kate Sowery and her team.
The event follows an intentional focus on community and connection.
“For the last six months or so we've spent a lot of time talking about building a community,” Gary says.
Selling out tickets and having people ask to attend next year indicated a good amount of interest to the team, so they’ll consider making it a tradition.
The Loaves & Fishes team serve dinner in the hall at All Saints, central Nelson, every Monday and Thursday night from 5:30pm and lunch on Wednesdays at 12:30pm. $3 will get you a meal – or five for $10.
