Equipping Children’s Ministry Leaders – An Interview with Zane Elliott

Equipping Children’s Ministry Leaders – An Interview with Zane Elliott

Children’s ministry is one of the most valuable investments a church can make, yet many leaders and volunteers feel under-equipped to teach the Bible with clarity and confidence. I caught up with Zane Elliott, Vicar of Holy Trinity Richmond, to discuss why training is so important and to learn more about the Gospel Training Trust Kids Ministry Training event happening at Holy Trinity Richmond on 1 March.

Why is it so important for churches to invest in training their children’s ministry teams?

Volunteers give so much of their time and energy, yet good training is often hard to come by. At the same time, children are constantly bombarded with messages that tell them to look within themselves for truth. We need to equip leaders to bring them back to what God says in His Word. Teaching the Bible well is a big task, and our teams need the skills to do it faithfully.

What are some of the biggest challenges children’s ministry leaders face today?

Helping kids understand their identity in Christ is more crucial than ever. That identity doesn’t come from feelings or experiences—it comes from knowing what God says about us in His Word. If we can clearly understand the big idea of a Bible passage, we can teach with clarity. When leaders have tools to grasp the heartbeat of Scripture, they’ll feel more comfortable handling the tough, inquisitive questions kids ask.

Many churches struggle to find people willing to serve. What encouragement would you offer?

Show that children’s ministry is valued. Pray for your leaders in services, include child-focused moments in worship, and provide training opportunities. When people see the eternal impact of discipling kids, they’ll want to be part of it.

What’s your vision for children’s ministry at Holy Trinity Richmond?

We want to be a Christlike, intergenerational whānau, with Bible teaching at the centre. Well-trained leaders help shape a vibrant, lasting faith in kids—one that we pray will stay with them for life.
