Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson, is seeking a compassionate and motivated Community Ministries Programme Leader to help us live out our vision.

Our vision: To maximise opportunities for social connection, civic engagement, evangelism, care and hospitality.

We are an Anglican-centred community, walking with Christ to share the love of God with others. This role is focused on strengthening social connection, care, hospitality, and community engagement, with a particular emphasis on supporting people aged 65 and over within the Cathedral congregation and the wider Nelson community.

About the Role

The Cathedral Ministries Programme Leader plays a key leadership role in pastoral care, hospitality, and outreach. You will work closely with the Dean, parishioners, volunteers, and community agencies to nurture wellbeing, build relationships, and ensure that older members of our community feel valued, connected, and supported.

This is a people-focused role combining pastoral presence, volunteer leadership, coordination, and practical administration.

Key Responsibilities

Community Outreach & Wellbeing

  • Promoting and nurturing the wellbeing of those who attend the Cathedral and the wider community especially those aged over 65.
  • Pastoral visiting of those who need more assistance.
  • Facilitating appropriate personal assistance for those in need, including referrals when necessary, and helping them and their families source appropriate     support and advice.
  • Taking part in rest home services and escorting those who need assistance.
  • Strengthening proactive welcome in the Cathedral
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communications within the Cathedral, Diocese and     community.

 

Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone who brings warmth, professionalism, and initiative. Ideally, you will have:

  • Strong listening skills and an empathetic, respectful approach
  • Ability to identify need and build trust-based relationships
  • Experience working with volunteers and other professionals
  • Background in social services, health, pastoral care, or a related field
  • Strong self-management and organisational skills
  • Good communication and computer skills (including report writing and promotional material)
  • First Aid skills and/or experience with Advance Care Planning (or willingness to be trained)
  • Willingness to be licensed to offer home communion if required

Membership of the Cathedral worshipping community would be an advantage.
