Archbishop Justin: new senior bishop of Tikanga Pākehā

Bishop of Wellington Justin Duckworth was enthusiastically welcomed by General Synod last night after Tikanga Pākehā presented him as their newly-elected senior bishop of the New Zealand Dioceses. Upon his installation, Archbishop Justin will become one of the three archbishops and primates of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia.

“Although I find myself looking ahead with a sense of the weight of responsibility,” Archbishop Justin said, “I am trusting God in this process. It is a huge privilege to be asked to lead in this way.”

We have had a difficult few years as a church and as a society at large and I think our challenges are not over. However, it is clear to me that we have a unique contribution to make going forward. In particular, I dream of being part of a growing, just, church: in which we have impact in partnering with the Spirit in God’s work of transformation within flourishing local congregations, all in the name of Jesus.

Archbishop Justin has served as Bishop of Wellington since 2012, with a focus on deepening the diocese’s culture of missional discipleship. He will continue to serve as Bishop of Wellington alongside Assistant Bishop Anashuya Fletcher.

“I'm delighted by this news,” said Bishop Steve.

Watiri and I have enjoyed deep friendship and partnership in God's mission with Bishop Justin and his wife Jenny for many years. We look forward to the leadership Archbishop Justin will bring in our three tikanga church. We pray for God's wisdom and sustaining grace for Justin and Jenny in this new season.
