Easter is such a huge concept for kids to get their head around, and it’s easy to be distracted by chocolate! Here are a few ideas to think about for your coming Easter gatherings and celebrations, inviting the whole whānau to participate while keeping the message of Jesus at the centre. You could use these at home, for all-age services, with family or to share with friends!
The Garden, The Curtain, & The Cross - YouTube
The true story of why Jesus died and rose again, in a language that kids can understand. I like this story because it helps explain the tricky idea of what Easter is actually about. I sent it as a Christmas prezzie to all congregations with kids last year, so dig it out for a read! It can spark some good discussions and a prayerful response... And it's accompanied by gorgeous illustrations.
Easter Sunday - Bible Explore
Heaps of ideas here, from games and activities to printables, crafts and video resources. I especially like the "He is Risen" printable holiday resource from the Salvation Army, and the bead crosses look cool too! Bible Explore has loads for journeying through the rest of the year too, so I recommend having a look at the rest of their website sometime.
The Super Cool Story of Jesus - YouTube
A brilliant story of Jesus with the cross at the centre, and an easy video to watch if you don't have a lot of time. "So now Jesus is alive, there's lots he wants to give; But most of all it's life and love, so we can really live."
Top 10 Easter service ideas - Max7
A great collection of ideas to celebrate Easter in community. They're really creative, and I especially like the paper cross tearing.
So much to find here! If you haven't made "resurrection eggs" before, they're such a cool interactive way to tell the Easter story (and FYI: you can get the eggs at Spotlight!). Strandz is the hub of kids and family ministry for all Anglican dioceses in Aotearoa, and there's always plenty to look through on the rest of the site too.
Have fun celebrating this wonderful season of hope, freedom and good news. And don’t forget to share it with your friends and neighbours too!

We have invited these writers to share their experiences, ideas and opinions in the hope that these will provoke thought, challenge you to go deeper and inspire you to put your faith into action. These articles should not be taken as the official view of the Nelson Diocese on any particular matter.
